The door is a building that can be used to protect oneself from players, with the added ability of being able to open the doors.

Overview[]

Stone-door1

A stone door

The door is a very useful tool- it acts like a slightly weaker wall that can be opened, making for a very versatile building block. Though weaker than their wall counterparts, doors are much more versatile since you can open them giving you entry into your home, while still acting as a form of protection. However, they have lower health and cost more to build, and they also have longer crafting times. This means that it will end up being less effective to spam these buildings, especially early game. They should be used cautiously and efficiently.

There are two main types of doors- low doors and big/regular doors. Low doors can be shot through, and are also much cheaper though weaker than the regular big door. This makes it effective for dealing with ghouls, since you can shoot through them and axe them from a safe distance. Notably, low doors open in front of them (front of their knobs), and big doors move to the top right of their knobs (clockwise) and can be rotated. It is very important to note that they temporarily lose their hitboxes while opening, and cannot be opened if something is in the gridspace where they open into. For instance, as low doors open in front of them, they cannot open if you place a building in front of their knobs. Beware- this can be yours or an enemy's building. They keep their hitboxes while open. Take this into account when placing and rotating doors, so it can be opened.

Door Types[]

There are several types of doors, as listed below:

Image Name Life Crafting Recipe Level Required Crafting Station Type Tier
Wood-door Wooden Low Door 2000 40 Wood None Workbench Low Door 1
Stone-door Stone Low Door 5000 40 Stone Level 3 Workbench Low Door 2
Steel-door Metal Low Door 10000 10 Shaped Metal Level 6 Research Bench Low Door 3
Wood-door1 Wooden Door 2500 60 Wood None Workbench Door 1
Stone-door1 Stone Door 6000 60 Stone Level 3 Workbench Door 2
Steel-door1 Metal Door 12500 15 Shaped Metal Level 6 Research Bench Door 3

As you can see, low door variants are cheaper but less powerful than their big door variants. They also serve different purposes.

Basic building techniques[]

There are few strategies that can be put into practice when using doors in a base. There are a few things to make sure of when placing the doors in your base as well as community strategies in base building.

Door placement strategies[]

Some things to determine is whether the doors will face outward or inward. This is usually a bigger problem with big doors because of the nature of opening these doors. It is good to have them outward in situations where you have more floors, doors, and need more space, and can defend your base well. Leading them inward makes your base harder to raid but removes precious space. This is harder in ghoul mode since players are smarter and may do things such as block your doors to make it harder to defend.

Many players will use two doors in one place. This is an effective and simple door placement that works quite well.

Bases[]

The first strategy is quite popular- the layers base strategy, depicted on the right. There are many walls in this base. Essentially you place doors on the perimeter of a square base, as with the basic base. However, you add extra walls on the exterior and doors to complement these extra walls on the outside, of course not being blocked by these walls. Basically you are just adding more layers in the base. This however removes a lot of space for Lapabots.

A more expensive strategy is called the door base. This is a base that has no walls, but instead solely uses doors as its protection. This lets you enter and exit from any direction. However, this is sometimes less effective because an enemy can effectively attack from any door, and due to its lower health, will be attackable on all sides. Also, due to the low craft speed and cost of doors, it does not make as much sense to do this on a basic official server start, and is better to combine walls with your doors so you can add Lapabots that can repair them. This is mostly used in sandbox community servers due to the large amount of resources given. Still, you can have lots of Lapabots in this base too. Due to the openness, however, the Lapabots may stack, requiring separate compartments for each bot.

However, it is possible to combine these bases- you can have the door base on the outside, having doors all around for quick retreats and effective defending, and encasing your layers base inside these versatile walls. It is very hard to get into the core of this base and takes the strengths of both bases and helps remove some of their negative qualities, making for a very strong base. This is also mostly used in sandboxes due to the expensive nature of this base.

Regardless, a very strong base is the alternate, where you add walls where you hug your Lapabots to (try to encase them with low wood walls too) and have doors that you can open and pass through. The Lapabots can reach to all parts of the base. This is more of a late game base since you will need lots of Lapabots and doors. This is a very versatile and effective base.

Functionalities[]

The functionalities of doors has importance in all parts of the game. It is important to know these because they are crucial for things such as defending against ghouls and raiders, and also allows you to make the most of these useful tools.

Basic[]

The most basic function of doors is that you can close them upon yourselves. This is more effective with larger doors since it completely covers you, and you are shielded from bullets, as the door covers your hitbox with its own. This lets you retreat quickly without the pain of opening the door, and for you to quickly go forward to execute a defensive push. However, it is countered by melee weapons since they can attack you while inside the door.

Process: Generally you can open the door with interact key 'e' and stand in the place the door just was. Then press e again to close it upon you. This works with both doors, but as said above, is more effective with big doors, as it almost turns it into a low door at will. You can also go into the open door, which is quicker but is harder to pull off. Stand on the side of the door where the knob is, but go to the right of the knob. then press e. You should be inside the opened door. This cannot be blocked as well, but you may lose time trying to get to the corner rather than pressing e twice. Never spam e- there is a cooldown where the door is being opened and cannot be closed, and vice versa.

Advanced[]

AdvancedDoorFunction1

There are also some more advanced parts of doors, though are quite easy to understand. The first is the Opened Wall- take advantage of doors sticking outward and have no floors attached. If you were to put a door where the enemy's door would normally open (as depicted by the picture), it would block and prevent the door from opening. However, it still blocks the enemy's door when the door you placed is open. This can be used for you and your teammates to all hammer a door without the enemy being able to open it. However, more aware enemies will add floors outside their doors, so this strategy usually works only against less experienced players, or players starting out. Notably, doors that are currently opened will also block doors if in the door opening radius

Another function is used for public doors (doors from abandoned houses and city that anybody can open). If you place a door where the public door normally opens, the pub door cannot open- so why would you do this? Well, if you open the door, then you and only you will be able to open the public door now. This was a big problem during the Christmas event due to the invulnerable doors, as you can use this strategy to secure the unbreakable doors for yourself.

Strategy[]

There are strategies that use the functionalities of doors (listed above) to use them to your advantage. This can be used when defending, raiding, and griefing.

Basic Defense[]

Both low doors and big doors have their places in defense. Big doors are usually more versatile, but low doors have specialized uses as well.

Firstly, low doors are good for ghouls. Though there are some certain exploits that help deal with ghouls, low doors are simple and cheaper ways to deal with these pesky enemies. Firstly, you can shoot through it, meaning you can grab a gun and attack the ghoul from a safe distance. Keep in mind both ghouls and players can melee through the doors. You can also get close to the door with your axe- don't hug the door, but keep a small distance. You should be able to axe the ghouls without them reaching you. Remember that you will damage your doors when using melee, but not to a large extent. Big doors don't work as well because of their larger hitbox and the way they open. Still, the axe technique used above will work similarly with big doors, since raw melee range isn't affected by buildings. Use the 'inside the door' technique mentioned above to use this with big doors.

Advanced Defense[]

Defending against players is generally harder than dealing with ghouls since they may know certain strategies and adapt to door placement. They can grenade your Lapabots through the walls, destroying an important part of your defense. They can also shoot through small doors and use dynamite to quickly dig a hole into your building. This makes defending against more experienced players much harder, and some strategies may or may not work. Generally big doors are good for attacking enemies, since you can use 'inside the door' strategy to snipe the players from safety. Occasionally the bullets will get stuck in the door, but don't move too much forward or they can deal lots of damage to you. Larger weapons, such as the sniper, negate this because the bullets appear to fire from the tip, making it easier to fire from doors. It is also easier to use these weapons since you are much safer and don't have to move as much, which alters the path of the bullet. The strong power of items such as the sniper rifle and the Desert Eagle help drill holes into the offensive push and may cause them to retreat, helping you build back a defense and waste precious time for them, all while you stay still within the safety of the door. Do note that they can use their axe to attack you, but if you have a high DPS weapon such as the submachine or AK47, you can quickly deal with them since equipping and holstering the axe takes time, meaning that they cannot gun-counter you as quickly. However, if you have a single-fire burst damage weapon or lower DPS weapon such as a sniper, Desert Eagle, or 9mm, you can weaken and attack them if they pull out their melee, though they can retreat easier. Remember- if they knock you to red or black health, don't be hesitant to retreat. You have the advantage and you have a base to run into when things get serious. However, this retreat can give the enemy important time to setup and strengthen their push. This is why the 'inside the door' strategy so important in defending.

Offense[]

Doors are very useful in offense as well. You can use this to both grief and create a camp for your fellow raiders.

You can use doors to grief by utilizing the opened door hitbox. If the enemy has only one layer of floors outside their doors, as depicted by the right, you can use a steel big door, also depicted on the right, and open it to cover the door. This makes it easier to raid the players. Also use the advanced functionalities listed above to help block these doors. This prevents the defenders from making defensive pushes but stops them from being baited into the front lines. Do note that, if you use dynamite with an open door down, it may destroy the door. If you use the hammer and dynamite strategy, then the door will instantly disintegrate with even one dynamite.
